Team experience: this article draws on concealment types encountered by members of our team during their professional careers. The example is explained in general terms for confidentiality and is not presented as a Bureau Securitas Ltd. client engagement.
An unfamiliar device on a vehicle can prompt several questions: what does it do, who authorised it, and is anyone at risk? A systematic response starts with those questions. Appearance alone does not distinguish an illicit tracker from legitimate vehicle equipment.
Our vehicle and GPS-tracker inspection service examines an agreed vehicle and concern, with access and working conditions established beforehand.
Different technologies need different questions
A location device may communicate through a cellular connection, interact with a Bluetooth finding network, or keep records for later collection. Power and installation arrangements also differ. Manufacturer-installed systems, fleet equipment and insurance devices should be identified in the brief.
Apple and Google describe unwanted-tracking alerts for compatible Bluetooth devices. Those features are useful for the supported ecosystem; they are not a complete vehicle inspection or a test for every tracking technology.
How to brief an inspection
Provide the vehicle make and model, ownership or control, reason for concern, service history and any relevant alert screenshots. State whether the issue concerns the vehicle itself, a bag or item carried in it, or a phone travelling with the occupant.
Agree a safe inspection location and access to relevant areas. Do not crawl under an unsupported vehicle or disconnect unknown wiring. Any work on installed vehicle systems should respect the owner’s authority and manufacturer or operator restrictions.
What the examination can establish
The inspection plan may combine physical examination with electronic survey methods selected for the concern. REI explains that non-linear junction detection indicates semiconductor electronics; it does not identify an object’s purpose or ownership by itself.
A vehicle already contains extensive legitimate electronics. Follow-up identification, service records or authorised technical examination may be needed to interpret an anomaly. A lack of a detected transmission does not establish that a tracker is absent.
If an item is identified, the report should describe its location, condition and the basis for the conclusion. Attribution to a person, recovery of stored data and legal use may need separate work. Digital forensic support is a distinct scope from the initial vehicle examination.
Safety before evidence collection
If you feel unsafe or believe you are being followed, seek a safe location and contact police. Follow current manufacturer instructions for a compatible unwanted-tracking alert. Do not continue a predictable routine or drive to a confidential location simply to keep an investigation discreet.
Keep relevant observations and alert information when safe. Our discovery guide explains how to discuss documentation and recovery without assuming the same action suits every device.
Frequently asked questions
Will my phone find every tracker?
No. Supported unwanted-tracking alerts apply to compatible devices. Cellular, wired or locally recording equipment may need a different examination.
Does a small box under a car prove illegal tracking?
No. The equipment needs identification, and its installation and use need context. Check authorised systems without confronting a suspected perpetrator.
Can the inspection include a residence or office?
Those can be discussed as additional scopes, with separate access permissions and inspection time.
Discuss the vehicle concern
Request a vehicle inspection discussion. Send the vehicle details, location, access authority and relevant observations through an agreed channel. For budgeting, see our approved starting range and quotation factors.
